Haiti’s Ongoing Devastation
It is impossible to turn the channel and not see something with reference to Haiti, whether it be for donations or new developments. After hearing about it for over a week, one becomes numb to the pain that those in Haiti are experiencing. Reading Deborah Sontag and Ginger Thompson's article, "On Street Tracing Haiti's Pain, Survival Goes On," put everything in perspective. There are so many personal stories and quotes from survivors that force you to realize Haitians are still struggling and need all the help possible to regain stability.
One story describes a woman with four children who was thankful for the $4 she found in her husband's pocket after he died during the earthquake. Stories like this convey the level of desperation and despair many Haitians face. Those who did survive are forced to walk streets haunted by death. With the total deceased surpassing 100,000, there are suggestions that more will die in the following weeks from disease and despair than from the destruction of collapsed buildings.
Although assistance continues to come from all over the world, it remains the responsibility of each individual to put their lives back in order and make peace with this undoubtedly catastrophic disaster.
