A Return to Conventional Oil and Gas Development
Royal Dutch Shell, one of the world's largest suppliers of oil and natural gas, has announced that it intends to move away from the exploitation of unconventional energy resources, such as those in Canada's oil sands, and back towards conventional oil and gas exploration.
The decision was likely influenced by pressure from environmental groups that have protested against the high ecological cost of oil sands development. But it is also indicative of the high costs and limited revenue potential that are associated with unconventional sources of energy such as oil sands and oil shale. Shell still plans to expand its existing oil sands operation, but just not nearly as much as was initially planned. The decision marks a return to what Shell sees as its core growth engine.
There is also no indication, however, that Shell intends to invest further in renewable energy sources. It froze its investments last year in technologies such as wind, solar, and hydrogen fuel cells, opting instead to focus on biofuels, which have a high environmental impact among renewables and contribute to the increasing cost of food worldwide. Most oil companies have chosen to follow a similar path, despite a changing political environment. The future of renewables is still uncertain, and for already profitable oil companies the decision to stay on the sidelines, at least for now, makes sense. Nonetheless, the impact that investment from the cash-awash oil and gas industry could have on the future renewables will be missed.
